As of December 31, 2021, there were a total of 121,461 veterinarians in the United States (118,624 in 2020), including 79,045 female veterinarians (65.21%) and 42,167 male veterinarians (34.79%).

Statistics on 87,589 veterinarians with complete data showed that 84.37% (73,900) of them practiced in clinical diagnosis and treatment institutions, and 15.63% (13,689) chose to engage in non-diagnosis and treatment work.

Among them, 57,805 people are engaged in companion animal diagnosis and treatment, accounting for 66%; 3,875 people are engaged in economic animal diagnosis and treatment, accounting for 4.42%; it is worth mentioning that 3,645 people are engaged in equine diagnosis and treatment activities, accounting for 4.16%.

Among the people engaged in non-diagnosis and treatment business, the proportions are ranked in order of academic institutions (5,986), industry enterprises (3,251) and governments (2,956).
